Bias binding is a type of trim or edging that is used to finish the edges of a piece of fabric, such as a garment or a quilt. It is made from strips of fabric that have been cut on the bias, which means at a 45-degree angle to the fabric’s grain. This allows the binding to stretch and curve easily around corners and curves, making it a versatile and essential sewing tool.

Bias binding is available in a wide range of colors, patterns, and widths, making it easy to find the perfect match for your project. It can be made from a variety of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, silk, and satin, and can be purchased pre-made or made from scratch using a bias binding maker.

One of the most common uses for bias binding is to finish the edges of a quilt. It can be used to bind the raw edges of the quilt top, the batting, and the backing fabric, creating a neat and professional finish. Bias binding can also be used to bind the edges of placemats, table runners, and other home decor projects.

In garment sewing, bias binding is often used to finish the edges of necklines, armholes, and sleeves. It can be used as a decorative accent, adding a pop of color or texture to a garment. Bias binding can also be used to create straps, belts, and ties, adding a finishing touch to dresses, blouses, and other garments.

Bias binding can be applied using a sewing machine or by hand. To apply bias binding by machine, the binding is first pinned or clipped to the edge of the fabric, and then stitched in place using a straight or zigzag stitch. To apply bias binding by hand, the binding is first folded in half and then stitched to the fabric using a slip stitch or other hand-stitching technique.

In summary, bias binding is a versatile and essential sewing tool that can be used to finish the edges of a wide range of projects. It is available in a variety of colors, patterns, and widths, and can be made from a variety of fabrics. Whether you’re quilting, sewing garments, or creating home decor projects, bias binding can help you achieve a neat and professional finish.
